Education: Bachelor of Science in Psychology from
the University of Oregon in Eugene. Laurel received her
law degree from Seattle University School of Law in Seattle,
Washington.
Professional Experience: Laurel
has worked for Stahancyk, Kent, Johnson & Hook, P.C.
since 1999. She has litigated dissolution cases throughout
the State of Oregon. Laurel has successfully represented
numerous clients in property and custody disputes, support
modifications, and divorce of both long and short-term marriages. She
is very experienced in litigating divorces, especially those
involving complicated business interests and issues
of business valuation. In addition, Laurel has years
of experience preparing prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
Laurel works closely with the estate planning department
to provide comprehensive legal counsel before, during and
after the divorce process.
Professional Activities: Laurel
is a member of the Oregon State and Multnomah County Bar
associations.
She also volunteers with St. Andrew's Legal Clinic
in Northeast Portland, providing pro bono legal services.
In early 2005, Laurel was
honored by the Multnomah Bar, Legal Aid Services of Oregon
and the Oregon Law Center for her pro bono work.
Community Involvement: Since
2003, Laurel has been a member of the Portland Business
Alliance, and is part of the Leadership Portland Class of
'04. Through this project, she has had the opportunity
to be a
"principal for a day" of an elementary school. Laurel
also volunteers her time with Legal Aid of Oregon as a Pro
Se Assistance Project Attorney, providing free legal support
and services to low income individuals, and she has assisted
the Riverdale Mock Trial team. Laurel also acted as
a Presiding Judge for the 2005-06 Classroom Law Project Highschool
Regional Mock Trial Competition. Additionally, she organizes the firm's
annual Dress for Success drive.
Laurel recently presented at the Samaritan
Counseling Centers Women’s Conference, Women
of Strength, Women in Transition: Forging our way through
change and challenge by focusing on our bodies, minds
and spirit. Laurel led a breakout session for
a group of women, exploring leadership inside and outside
the home. She covered a broad swath of life lessons from
personal budgets and estate planning, to setting an example
for your children through volunteer service.
In 2006, Stahancyk, Kent,
Johnson & Hook was honored with the 2005
Better Business Bureau Large Business of the Year Award for
overall excellence in Integrity, Community Service, Community
Involvement, and Innovative Business Practices. SKJ&H
is the first law firm to win this prestigious award.
